How I Got My Healthiest Skin in My 30s After Years of Breakouts

Like many women, I struggled with oily, acne-prone skin throughout my teens and 20s. It seemed like no matter what products I used, I always had to deal with shine, congestion, and breakouts - especially around my period. My skin always had an angry, inflamed look that made me self-conscious.

But in my late 20s, I noticed a shift. As I inched closer to 30, my skin started becoming less oily and the constant breakouts finally began to subside. Now in my 30s, I have healthier, calmer skin than I ever did in my youth!

So what changed? In this post, I'll share the steps I took to transform my skin, read on for the tips!

My Saving Grace Was Finally Seeing a Dermatologist

The biggest improvement in my skin came after I finally consulted a dermatologist in my late 20s. I wish I had done it years earlier! Referred by a good friend, my dermatologist diagnosed my skin as extremely dehydrated and deficient in ceramides. She said it was overproducing oil to overcompensate.

Then, I went to a facialist who recommended products to repair my moisture barrier without clogging pores. I started using hydrating serums to get the skin to soften up for extractions. Having a professional assessment and prescription treatment was life-changing.

Here’s what I use:

Exfoliation is Crucial for Skin Health

Another skin saver was realizing how essential exfoliation is. I used to avoid it, fearing it would aggravate my skin. But proper exfoliation removes dead skin cells, prevents ingrown hairs/clogged pores, and allows products to absorb better.

I like using PMD's Personal Microderm device according to my cycle – it's gentle but effective. Paula's Choice BHA liquid exfoliant is also a staple for me. I focus on chemical exfoliation over scrubs to avoid irritation. I also started dermaplaning (shaving facial hair) once the acnes are mostly gone.

Remember to exfoliate gently based on your skin type. Oily skin can handle more frequent exfoliation, while dry skin benefits from a gentler approach. Take it slow if you have sensitive skin. Finding the right balance can work wonders!

My Double Cleansing Game Changer

Discovering double cleansing was a total game changer on my skincare journey! Double cleansing involves first massaging your face with an oil-based cleanser to melt away makeup and sunscreen. You then follow up with a water-based cleanser to remove residue.

I use Dermalogica's Precleanse oil and Cerave's hydrating cleanser daily. The oil cleanse lifts dirt while nourishing my skin. And double cleansing means rinsing away impurities without stripping my skin. My complexion has never been calmer.

When double cleansing, take your time massaging the skin. Use light circular motions and pay attention to problem areas. Take care around the delicate eye region. Double cleansing at night is a ritual I now swear by for happy skin!

Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!

As my dermatologist emphasized, hydration is so much more important than moisture for skin health. She explained that breakouts can signal a damaged moisture barrier.

I incorporated serums like Vichy Mineral 89 to hydrate without clogging pores. Hyaluronic acid is another great hydrating ingredient – I DIY a hydrating mist with it. Eating hydrating foods like cucumber and watermelon and drinking lots of water helps too.

Look for lightweight gels, essences and serums focused on hydration rather than thick creams. Hydrated skin is healthy, bouncy skin!

Improving Blood Circulation for Glowing Skin

Beyond topical products, I’ve found improving blood circulation also gives my skin a natural glow. Regular facial massages boost blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients. Massage in upward strokes, using a hydrating oil or balm.

I also noticed my skin looks brightest when I exercise to get my heart pumping. And sleeping on my back prevents fluid accumulation in my face. Improving circulation brings out your inner radiance!

My Go-To Nourishing Masks

Lastly, masks are still an essential part of my skincare routine in my 30s. I use them a few times a week when my skin needs a boost. Clay masks are great for oily, congested skin. I also love an overnight hydrating Korean sheet mask.

Some current favorite masks are Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay, Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, and First Aid Beauty's limited edition Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie. Make sure to apply masks to clean skin, and don't leave them on too long.

Masking is the ultimate skin treat! Take the time to relax and let the natural extracts nourish your skin.

Conclusion

The steps I've shared – from seeing a dermatologist to mask treatments – made a huge difference in improving my skin health in my 30s. I wish I had learned these tips sooner! But it's never too late to start focusing on gentle care, hydration and overall skin wellness.
